Captures
Captures in Alloy are high-fidelity starting points for prototyping—screen and code snapshots of your product's real structure, UI and styling that ground Alloy's AI in your exact look and feel. You can create captures using the Alloy browser extension or by providing a publicly accessible link. All captures are stored centrally in your workspace, where you can quickly spin up new prototypes from them.
What are captures?
Captures are screen grabs and code grabs of your product's structure, look and feel. They provide context for Alloy to prototype in your product's visual style. Use captures as starting points for your prototyping.
Create, edit, and delete captures
You can capture your product using Alloy's browser extension or by providing a publicly-accessible link. Alloy stores your captures centrally, so your team can use them as starting points for prototypes.
Capture from the browser extension
The browser extension is the most accurate way to capture your product. The extension allows you to capture experiences that may be private or require credentials to view.
To capture your product using the extension:
- Add the Alloy extension to your browser.
- Navigate to the experience you want to capture for prototyping.
- Select the Alloy extension, then select Capture. A new tab opens with your capture, ready to prototype by prompting Alloy in the chat box.
Capture from a public link
If you cannot use the browser extension, you can capture your product by supplying a publicly-accessible link.
To capture from a public link:
- Sign into the Alloy app.
- From the Prototypes page, select the Public link option.
- Paste a publicly-accessible link to the experience you want to capture and select Send. A new tab opens with your capture, ready to prototype by prompting Alloy in the chat box.
Rename a capture
Captures are automatically added to the Captures directory in the Alloy app. Alloy auto-generates a name based on the elements in the capture. You may wish to rename these for easier retrieval.
Note: Renaming does not affect any prototypes built from the capture. You can safely rename captures without any downstream effects.
To rename a capture:
- Select Captures from the sidebar.
- Search for and locate the capture you want to rename.
- While hovering over the capture's thumbnail, select ... > Rename.
Delete a capture
Alloy does not limit the amount of captures you can save to your workspace. However, you may wish to delete captures to keep your capture directory clean.
Warning: You cannot undo deletion. Deleting a capture does not delete prototypes created off the capture.
To delete a capture:
- Select Captures from the sidebar.
- Search for and locate the capture you want to delete.
- While hovering over the capture's thumbnail, select ... > Delete.
View a capture
Anytime you capture your site or product using the browser extension or a public link, Alloy places the capture in your Captures directory. All members of your Alloy workspace can view any capture created by any member in the workspace.
To search for and view a capture:
- Select Captures from the sidebar.
- Use the search bar to search for a capture by keyword. Use the Site captured filter to hide or show captures based on the URL of the site. Use the Created by filter to hide or show captures created by specific workspace members.
Captures are ordered by last edited date by default. Select Last edited to change how they are sorted. You can choose to sort by last created date or alphabetically.
Create a prototype from a capture
Captures represent a starting point for prototyping with Alloy. To create a new prototype from a capture, simply select the capture you want to prototype from in the Captures directory.
