Public links
Public links are URLs that anyone can open without logging in, authenticating or using a private network. Alloy uses them as an alternative way to capture your product when the browser extension cannot be used. If a page loads in a private or incognito window without prompting for credentials, it is publicly accessible and can be supplied to Alloy to create a capture for prototyping.
What is a public link?
Public links are URLs that don't require users to log in or authenticate an account to view. They don't require authentication or special permissions to access.
URLs that are only viewable on an internal network, behind a firewall or via a VPN are not public links. A good test is to try viewing the URL in a private or incognito tab. If the page loads in a private browsing session without logging in, it is publicly accessible.
Capture a public link
We recommend using Alloy's browser extension for capturing your product for prototyping. If this isn't possible, you can provide Alloy with public links to capture and begin prototyping.
This approach is best for capturing static pages with minimal interactivity. Alloy may not capture all interactive elements perfectly using public links.
To capture from a public link:
- Sign into the Alloy app.
- From the Prototypes page, select Public link.
- Paste a publicly-accessible link to the experience you want to capture and select Send. A new tab opens with your capture, ready to prototype using the chat box.
How to view captures made via a public link
Anytime you capture your site or product using the browser extension or a public link, Alloy places the capture in your Captures directory. All members of your Alloy workspace can view any capture created by any member in the workspace.
To search for and view a capture:
- Select Captures from the sidebar.
- Use the search bar to search for a capture by keyword. Use the Site captured filter to hide or show captures based on the URL of the site. Use the Created by filter to hide or show captures created by specific workspace members.
Captures are ordered by last edited date by default. Select Last edited to change how they are sorted. You can choose to sort by last created date or alphabetically.
